The House Design Guide

We have unearthed the best of the magazine's archives to build a website full of useful __design tips, decoration advice from the professionals (Rita Notes and the Dos and Don'ts of Decoration in particular), and houses traditional English interiors and to modern designs.

We hold some truths to be self-evident. That the best kitchens and bathrooms are those with clever storage solutions, for instance, and the fact that the most functional areas of the house, such as utility rooms, need special attention to ensure they are as handsome as they are useful. Much of the rest is still up for debate, and largely down to personal taste. This is where the HOUSE __design guide can help. For this master document, we have scooped up all our most useful articles and organised them into categories for ease of navigation.

Most of us focus on redesigning one room at a time, so we have listed decoration ideas, shopping tips and advice for those individual spaces: bathrooms, bedrooms, dining rooms, kitchens and living rooms. Doing all the hard work yourself? See our list of helpful pieces on DIY projects - and take a peek at small rooms while you're there. We hope you find these resources rewarding. Just remember to 'let the academic stuff go', as Alidad says, and take Douglas Mackie's advice never to be afraid of a bit of bad taste.
