How to choose A Christmas Tree

Nothing says Christmas like heading out with the family to pick up this year's tree. But the process is more complicated than it might initially seem: so many species of trees, so many different advantages and disadvantages... Fear not! Jo Human from The Christmas Forest is on hand to lead you out of the woods

The best trees for...

Living with pets

Fraser fir is the best choice as it's a smaller breed, thus limiting the potential dangers of a bigger tree coming down. Once you've installed the tree, try to wait a few days before decorating so as to give your pet time to adjust. (Note: it may be better to decorate when the pet isn't there.) Once the tree is complete, cover the water reservoir to prevent visits from thirsty guests, and you could even try putting orange peel around the tree to deter your cat.

Avoiding dropped needles

The fir trees - Nordmann, Noble and Fraser - are best, but they still have to be looked after, watered and exposed to constant heat. If the tree is freshly cut and hasn't been stored for months, these fir species should keep their needles for the whole season.

Small spaces

Living trees in pots are smaller and make sweet additions to any small space. Also because the tree isn't cut, you can replant it in the garden after Christmas is over. Being a more slender breed, Fraser firs are also a good option.

Making a grand impression

A large bushy Nordmann fir has soft, luxuriant foliage and is the most reliably symmetrical Christmas tree in shape. The Christmas Forest sell this breed in sizes up to 16ft - when decorated and lit up, this tree is sure to make an impression.

How to care for your tree:

  • Think of your tree as you would a bunch of flowers - a well-cared-for tree will keep its good looks for up to 4 weeks.
  • Keep it outside until you want to put it up and decorate it.
  • When the time comes, saw off 2cm from the bottom before putting into a water-holding stand.
  • Make sure to keep it watered and away from heat sources (i.e. if near a radiator, turn it off).

Where to buy it:

The Christmas Forest is London's favourite tree retailer and a tree is planted in Africa for every tree bought. christmasforest.co.uk
