Selldorf Architects to Expand Frick Collection
The Frick Collection, a New York–based art museum, has selected Selldorf Architects to __design a major upgrade of its facilities on the Upper East Side. Principal and Interior Design Hall of Famer Annabelle Selldorf will collaborate with Frick leadership to address the institution’s increasing need to enhance and expand its facilities, which were designed by Carrère & Hastings in 1914.
Selldorf’s redesign will include enhancements such as upgrading its conservation and research facilities, creating new galleries, and—for the first time—providing dedicated spaces and classrooms for the Frick’s educational programs. Selldorf will work within the museum’s built footprint to maintain the structure’s signature residential scale, but will reorganize current spaces to accommodate additional uses.
The Frick’s leadership selected Selldorf following an 18-month search for a firm with expertise in renovating historic structures. Selldorf’s track record fit the bill—one past project includes restoring the neighboring Neue Galerie, also a Carrère & Hastings building from 1914. “Selldorf Architects understands and appreciates … how new designs can enrich, rather than overwhelm, already distinguished architectural spaces,” said Ian Wardropper, Frick Collection director.
Initial plans for the project will be revealed in winter 2017-18.
