Inside Michelle Obama's Garden
Michelle Obama broke ground on the current White House kitchen garden in 2009, shortly after her husband's election. Since then it has become the centre of the First Lady's campaiging efforts for healthier eating, agricultural education and eco-friendly food consumption. Take a look around...
The new arbour was added in October this year and stands on stone with an inscription which reads: 'WHITE HOUSE KITCHEN GARDEN established in 2009 by First Lady Michelle Obama with the hope of growing a healthier nation for our children'.
The vegetables grown in the garden are used by chefs in the White House in dishes forthe First family and their guests. Produce is also sent to a local food charity.
Chamomile grown in the garden earlier this year was harvested and dried, and was incorporated into the meal at the Singapore State Dinner.
A patio area of the garden has an outdoor dining table - the names of the trees from which the differnt types of wood came from are inscribed on the table.
Jalapeño peppers are grown in the garden.
The White House Kitchen Garden is part of a National Park along with the surrounding White House grounds. 'President's Park' is maintained by the National Park Service.
Students from around the country help the First Lady with the autumn harvest as part of the 'Let's Move' programme.
Artichokes also grow in the garden.
Part of the autumn harvest: tomatoes, squash, beans, cucumbers, and figs.
