Spotted on Instagram: 6 Interiors That Nod to History
Interior Design hosts a weekly photo contest on Instagram called #idpicks. Each Wednesday, we announce a new theme and ask our followers to tag their images with our hashtag. Here, we share the submissions that caught our eye. Make sure to check our Instagram account, @interiordesignmag, for the next topic and a chance to be featured!
This week, we asked to see interiors that nod to history—whether Art Deco hotels, renovated factory buildings, or old brick houses.
Don’t forget to tag your images of interiors that nod to history with #idpicks! Whether it’s a renovated factory building, old brick house, or Art Deco hotel, tag your images with #idpicks and our editors will repost their favorites on Instagram and InteriorDesign.net this week. What began as the Louisiana Trust & Savings Bank in the 20's, and later became the State Government Office in the 60's, is now the new Watermark Baton Rouge Hotel. The building's rich, historic narrative is preserved throughout the design, giving guests an unparalleled, cultural experience. Iconic features include eight bas-relief murals commissioned in 1949 depicting Louisiana's history of pride and progress, dramatic marble walls and staircases, and former bank vaults converted into meeting and dining spaces. #idpicks . . . #GenslerHouston #Hospitality #hotel #hoteldesign #architecture #design @WatermarkBR @autographhotels
French Communist Party Headquarters/Oscar Niemeyer Paris/1964 (International Style) Designed by Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer (1907-2012) at the height of the Party’s membership in 1964, the complex consists of a six-story above ground tower and a series of subterranean meeting rooms, the largest of which Niemeyer chose to expose by forcing its dome to rise above the surface of the entrance plaza. The building’s gem is the Assembly Hall whose interior surface is clothed by a suspended radial grid of white-anodized aluminum baffles. In addition to imparting a glistening appearance to the space, the baffles work to diffuse light and to reinforce the acoustics of the space. One problem that Niemeyer had to address was how to incorporate doors into the sloping surface of the domes walls. He solved this by pulling the exterior surface of the dome through the opening in order to create an aperture (see image) within which is located a pneumatic-operated sloping door. #oscarneimeyer #frencharchitecture #paris #dome #architecture #arch #architecturestudent #archlovers #idpicks
