Desig House: Style File: Emma Sims Hilditch

Emma Sims Hilditch's journey to interior __design was somewhat roundabout. As the daughter of an interior designer she was surrounded by beautiful things whilst growing up, but rather than delve straight into __design she elected to complete a business degree, afterwards working in film before beginning the soft furnishings cottage industry that became Sims Hilditch.

Championing the 'new English country style' in cites and countryside alike, Emma's extensive portfolio includes projects ranging from full manor houses to single rooms in cottages. Considering the company's elegant English aesthetic, it is appropriate that the studio is housed in The White Hart, a Grade 2 listed inn that was brought back to life by the team in 2013.

As one of House & Garden's Top 100 Designers, it is unsurprising that Emma was recently recruited to makeover the interiors of the home of House & Garden editor, Carole Annett. Emma described how the large house needed 'cohesion and flow' to create the easy homely elegance central to the English country aesthetic. She also encouraged Carole to scale up various pieces: 'I would never have put such a huge chandelier in the middle of the room, or chosen the two enormous glass lanterns from Vaughan that hang over the island in the kitchen, but these are now among my favourite things in the house.'
