Mosa Tiles Enliven Venetian Villa by JM Architecture
When designing a three-bedroom villa on the Venetian coast for a young family, Italian studio JM Architecture used ceramic surfaces to add dimension and fluidity to both indoor and outdoor spaces. Principal Jacopo Mascheroni specified Dutch manufacturer Mosa’s award-winning array of ceramic tiles to create textural play within the home.
The clients, who cited a low-maintenance home as their top priority, wanted to eliminate superfluous finishes. Mascheroni introduced Mosa’s Quartz collection of ceramic tiles for the flooring, which help create warmth within the predominantly white interior. “We wanted to use other materials to enhance the whiteness, and vice versa,” he says. “On the other hand, we understood that the home could also feel sterile, especially without the use of wood finishes in the design.”
Knowing that nighttime arrives early in Northern Italy, the architects sought materials that retained their visual luster even under artificial lighting. “Mosa’s Quartz collection not only solved our functional needs, but also offered an original aesthetic,” Mascheroni says. “Both natural and artificial lighting worked with the tiles to produce a homey atmosphere—away from the monotonous white and sameness.” Mascheroni, who experimented with other Mosa collections to clad poolside decking, specified the brand for all indoor and outdoor spaces.
The architects also outlined a sustainable agenda to maximize the home’s energy-efficiency. Mosa’s LEED-contributing ceramic tiles, which received Cradle-to-Cradle® Silver certification, join the multitude of eco-friendly features that distinguish the villa, including inlaid photovoltaic panels and radiant floor heating. “Using Mosa was an integral decision and a great asset to our sustainability goals, especially as the material was used throughout,” says Mascheroni.
