Art Jameel Reveals Design for Arts Facility in Dubai by Serie Architects

Art Jameel, a Middle Eastern non-profit for the arts, has unveiled plans for a new gallery space and research facility in Dubai. One of the city’s first non-profit contemporary arts institutions, the Jameel Arts Centre Dubai, designed by UK-based firm Serie Architects, will present curated exhibitions from regional artists that draw from the Jameel Art Collection.

Serie Architects conceived of the new facility as a series of three-story aluminum-clad boxes bound together by a single-height concrete colonnade. The facility’s 10,000 square meters, 1,000 of which will be dedicated to galleries, will range from soaring rooms that accommodate large-scale sculpture to smaller chambers for more intimate viewing. The venue will also include an open-access research center and a library, events spaces, an outdoor sculpture area, a restaurant, and a roof terrace for film screenings.

Each of the facility’s various buildings will connect via public outdoor courtyards designed by landscape architect Anouk Vogel. Each courtyard will nod to a different desert biome by featuring a different selection of flora, including rare plants sourced from the United Arab Emirates.

Art Jameel also announced a long-term partnership with the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The new partnership will enable the Met to acquire works by modern and contemporary artists from the Middle East.

The Jameel Arts Centre Dubai will open in 2018.
