Architects Alberto Basaglia and Natalia Rota Nodari specified sturdy steel and supple polypropylene for S’mesh, their spare-yet-snug chair for Diemmebi. But did they realize it was already destined for a makeover? At Expo Milano 2015, the manufacturer launched a competition to reinterpret the design, giving detached backrests to 50 registered contestants to get them started. The winner will be announced next March—but the real champ is here in Chicago this week.
